The Squat is the first movement we talk about here at the INFERNO when you first come in and it is usually THE movement that will determine if you will hve any issues with other movements. If you were to look at a young child, they haven't been tainted by laziness or injury yet, but they move the way their body tells them to move. Feet are straight ahead, weight is on the heels, lumbar curve is arched, the downward movement begins with the hips moving back and then descending and chest is up. It built into us to move like this. Yet, we hear people say its bad for your knees to squat below parallel when actually the weight is transferred to your hips once you hit that point. So, it actually SAVES your knees to go low. We want your knees to drive out when you are descending which creates torque to help drive your back up to standing. All of these things are important and necessary for health and function. Check out this little video from Coach Glassman talking about squatting.
