What is the difference between a habit and a tradition?  A habit is something that we usually do ritually to the point that we feel thrown off or not right if we dont do it.  Think about your morning coffee, or maybe the 3pm coffee is more of a ritual.  Habits obviously can be a good thing or a bad thing depending on what it is.  So what is a tradition?  Isnt it something we do ritually?  maybe its not a daily thing but it still happens extremely consistently.  Have any holiday traditions? How often do you break them or not do them?  If you break them, do you feel thrown off or not right?  I know i do.  I say the biggest difference is that with traditions, there are feelings behind them.  One of my Christmas traditions is that i take my oldest daughter to pick out our tree, we get coffee and hot chocolate, listens to old school holiday tunes and put all our Christmas stuff up.  I love doing this.  It make Christmas feel like Christmas to me.  But with her getting older and having a busy teenager life also, this tradition will be either crammed into a small time frame instead of a relaxing time or it might not happen this year.  This definitely bums me out.  But i have to remember that its not the actual tradition that needs to happen:  its the feelings.  The feelings comes from me and Lex spending time together during the holidays.  Its the joy of watching her grow up. Its the joy of watching Elf and laughing about the things we did when we watched that movie when she was a young one!  Its remembering all those good things.  So if your traditions seem to have been knocked over like a house of cards, just remember you can get the same feelings with some other methods.  Feel the feelings.  Dont dwell on the fact that the usual things arent happening.  That doesnt mean things are bad.  Now go listen to some Frank Sinatra and go watch The Santa Claus and be happy:)
