Holidays can be very tough times for people.  There is financial stress, family stress, children stress, gift finding stress, home stress, etc etc.  I think the reason for all the stress is that there are expectations on the holiday.  Expectations of putting the tree up, the family session of putting up the Christmas decorations, stress about if you will get the right presents and if the kids will be happy or not; expectations on your relationships, expectations of the time with you family or in-laws.  I can go on and on.  The problem with expectations is that you leave the option for success to be a VERY thin line of just "this".  If it's anything else then it doesn't count or its a fail.  But is it a fail?  Maybe it's really good but in a totally different way.  Don't have an expectation on it.  Just plan on having a good time.  And whatever you do and whatever happens, smile and enjoy the occasion.  This same technique can be used in any situation.  The idea is to stay fluid so that as things happen you can respond and react.  If you have an expectation then you are pigeon-holing the activity.  So just plan on enjoying and let it roll!  See what happens:)
