As important as it is, I get very leery about telling people to listen to their bodies when it comes to training.  Mostly because they will choose to "listen" when they just don't want to do the work.  We know that rest is important and that there will be days when we are just exhausted and you will have to choose which will get you the most benefits; working out or taking a nap.  There are so many times when you come home from traveling or having a long day at work where you don't feel like doing anything but sitting there on the couch.  But do you remember the time when you actually got yourself to the gym and worked out and you felt amazing afterward?  It does happen.  Getting the blood moving, dusting off the cobwebs of the day, being able to turn your brain off and get a good sweat could be the magic pill for the looooong day.  But what if you have had little sleep over the last few days, you have been slammed at work, you have been able to make the last couples days of workouts and been pushing hard, etc and then you come in and you just feel wrecked.  Sure you could push through and get the workout in but what would you really be getting out of it?  This is where you have to really be able to sit down and take a REAL look at yourself, your goals, your position in training, and how your training has been going.  If you assess that you really need some rest, then you need to rest.  This doesn't mean you go run a mountain or swim 6 miles, or bike ride for 50 miles.  It means you get your shit done and get yourself to bed as soon as you can.  Sleep as long and as deep as you can so that your body can do whatever repairs it needs.  It obviously needs to have this more than it needs to have weights thrown overhead.  But here's the hard part, when you really don't want to be there then you might be able to justify any reason why you shouldn't be there.  Maybe tired, maybe a long day, maybe "kinda sore", maybe "not enough nutrients", maybe the "wrong biorhythm for the day", etc but you will have to understand that there will a consequence to whatever you choose to do.  Whether its the rest, the workout, the whatever.  So if you assess that the consequence is worth it then go for it.  Don't be a dumb jock.  Be smart and give your body EXACTLY what it needs.  You know what it is ! :)
