How would you feel if you could increase your testosterone levels around 20% and decrease your cortisol levels by about 25% by standing a certain way before you had to perform?  An increase in testosterone, for both men and women, increases strength and confidence.  A decrease in cortisol is a decrease in stress or which means you'd be more at ease and relaxed.  Regardless of what you have to do, I think these would be some pretty nice things to add to your execution.  So how do you do it?  We talk about posture all the time when it comes to movement or lifting or texting.  We know how terrible bad posture can be on us.  But in a book and a TEDtalk about "Power Posing", Amy Cutty, states that standing, or posturing in a very confident manner, can nudge your brain into being more confident and allow you to have a particular hormonal response which will make you act or respond in a positive and more confident manner.  Now even though there had been some speculation about this idea, think about it for a second, what position do superheroes have in the comic books?  Do they stand with rounded backs, crossed arms, slouched backs or hips?  NO!  They stand tall, shoulders back, hands on hips, feet wide, basically they make themselves bigger than life!  Cuddy feels that if you have a big task or interview, you can take 2 minutes and strike this superhero pose and it will actually start to change the mindset, which in turn will change your hormone levels so that you are able to respond much more confident and more successfully.  Is this a perfect science?  No.  But since we know that if you think positive that positive things will happen, then this is a good first step.  In fact, its supposed to by-pass the thoughts of "faking it til you make it".   So the next time you have something big about to happen, go to the bathroom, stairwell, or a place where you can be private for a bit and strike your best Big Wide Strong Confident Super Hero pose and hold it for 2 minutes.  Then see how you feel when you go to perform!!  )
