Stress is something that truly rots us from the inside.  I have felt the smashing blow of accumulated stress and ended up in the hospital for a week and the doctors couldn't tell me anything that was wrong.  It will affect each of us different and we don't even get to decide how it affects us.  It just will.  The body really doesn't know the difference between work stress, family stress, financial stress, or physical stress.  Your body just senses it and then sets the body up in the Fight or Flight mode so it can respond.  This is a primitive response that was designed to protect us.  Well, we obviously aren't in the same environment (ie animals trying to eat us), but we are existing almost in a constant state of other stress.  It NEEDS to be our job now to deflect or mitigate stress in our world as much as possible.  Some will use religion, some will use meditation, some will use yoga, some will use music, and others will use exercise.  The last one, exercise, is interesting because, in our world of CrossFit, we talk about how important INTENSITY is since that's where the magic happens.  BUT, if you are really going for, then your body senses stress and releases the hormone Cortisol into the body.  So then does this workout help release stress?  Sort of is the best answer.  I say this because maybe the workout allows you to turn off your brain for an amount of time so you aren't thinking about your other problems.  Or maybe you are letting out some anger and aggression but lift and banging some heavy weights around.  But even though there is a mental release, if you are really going hard, then there is a physical response to the stress of the workout.  And your body adds stress to the rest of your other stress and will also release the Cortisol hormone.  The way to use the workout is to NOT make it be a "push super hard" workout.  The goal would be to just move somewhere in the 50-70% exertion range.  You get the Dopamine benefits without building the stress up in your body.  You get the mental rest without kicking your body into Fight or Flight mode so it can work on healing the other body parts that NEED it.  So the next time you are stressed out and NEED to workout, just be smart about it.  Make it work in your favor!
