In business, it seems to make sense to know what your competitors are doing.  The same seems to follow suit with athletics or other activities.  It SEEMS that to understand their products, their moves, their strengths, that you can then adjust yours to make yours hopefully better.  But I don't think it does.  It happens more often than not that once you start spending time and energy on them, you lose sight and concentration on the most important thing and that's you.  Let's take business,  if you spend your time researching what all the others in the same realm around you are doing and you are trying to compare yourself to that, then all you do is groom yourself to a "version" of them.  You aren't on your own track.  You are concentrating on their track and being better than them at their thing.  With sports, you can look at films and video to see what you have to contend with but you can't go and change your whole style to suit someone else.  You became awesome by being you.  You need to continue to be you.  Sure you can add some stuff to your tool chest, but the core needs to be you!.  We are resilient and creative beings that, when we need to, can create some amazing things.  We need to let our passions, our strengths, and our creativity flow, and this happens best when we aren't bogged down with the concern of others.  So in simplest terms, don't give a shit about others and just do you!! :)
