I was laying on the sand start line at my first lifeguard competition.  I was a pool guard going against beach guards.  Yes, we got pounded in the surf and paddling but beach flags seemed to be my thing.  I was crushing them!  They couldn't get up or turn as fast as I could.  Finally, I felt unstoppable!  I made it to the finals and it was me and one other guard with one lone piece of hose stuck in the sand 50' down the way.  "Heads up....Heads down.......TWEET!"  We blasted up and turned and I was WAY ahead of him!  I was so stoked!  "I am winning!  I'm going to beat this kid! " My hand went up in victory as we neared the flag.  Just then, he doves under my arms and snatched the flag out from under me!  I lost.  As much as I was pissed when it happened, I love this story.  It keeps me grounded.  I have been cocky and lost.  That is an important lesson.  But on the flip side, I have walked into a gym and had wrestlers talking about having to wrestle me next and chuckling about how they would analyte me.......and I was standing right there.! EVERY time that happened, I won.  So why the flips of these stories?   Well, I do believe in confidence but I don't believe in cockiness.  I do believe in believing in your skills and abilities but I don't believe in thinking you are better than others.  The fact is that ANYONE can be beaten on ANY DAY.  Sure the odds might be stacked against someone, but I have seen it happen WAY more times than I'd like to say.  If you think you are better than others then you are either completely insecure and you have to put up this protective barrier of stupidity, or you are a cocky idiot and you will get yours.  It ALWAYS happens.  Moral of the story, you can be really, really, really good but you don't have to be a douche bag about it.   Be cool, be good and let your actions speak!!  :)
