How many of you use your workouts as a stress reliever from your day and all the things in it? I know I do. I'll say that I really believe my workouts helped me through my divorce way back when. It was a way for me to put all the things that were going on and all my feelings on a shelf outside the walls of the gym, and I could just give myself a heavy dose of dopamine and endorphins to make me happy. I honestly believe this works wonders. But one thing that we forget is that as good as it is for mindset, it might be the thing that pushes us over the edge stress-wise. See the body understands stress, what it is and what it does. And in simplest terms, your body reacts to STRESS. All kinds. In fact, your body doesn't see a difference between relationship stress, financial stress, job stress, moving stress, lack of sleep stress, injury or sickness stress or physical stress.......... like if you are pushed physically running from a tiger or....working out. That's right, all of these things add cortisol (stress hormone) to your body. And the more cortisol in your body, the less healing and recovery you have, the less sleep you will be able to get, the more fat you will keep on your body, the less sex you will have or want to have, and you mental state will deteriorate. Being able to handle a ton of stress seems to be worn like a badge of honor but it's smashing us. So can you still come to the gym? Sure! But you need to change the way you attack it. In the stress situation, it's not about working and pushing for maximum intensity. It's about movement. It's about getting that flush of positive hormones in the body without caring about how you do, how you compare to others, how much weight you lift or what place you come in. It's about putting on the blinders and enjoying movement. This can be anywhere from 50-75% of your normal daily workout intensity. Keep your mind on the positives of whats happening. Then when its done, give yourself a moment to let those chemicals soak into your body. Feel how good everything feels and then you can get back to all the issues you have in regular life. So don't NOT show up, just change how you are when you are there! Make it work for you!!:)
