Doing 24 workouts in 24 hours is a unique experiment. But one thing that I did find out was exactly how important the Intensity part is when we are training. We have said that if you want to gain benefits from our workouts you have to ramp up that intensity. If we remove the intensity and "go easy", then all we get is a short easy workout. Sure you are doing movements but you aren't forcing a change in the body. I did all but one workout as RX in the 24-hour set. Yes, I was breathing harder than normal. Yes, I was sweating. But I wasn't pushing intensity at all. Now, of course, I was doing that because the "workout" was actually 24 hours long so I needed to bring the pace way down on them. But after my 13 hours of sleep when it was all done, I wasn't nearly as sore as if I had pushed a hard workout 2 days n a row. What this tells me is not that its better to go easier just so I'm not sore, but that I didn't gain anything from the workouts. Some have said that you should never be sore from a workout. I disagree. The soreness is from your body breaking down muscle fibers which actually is how the growth process works. Break it down and the body builds it up. But after doing 24 workouts there was little break down at all. I got some exercise and some movement during them, but for my fitness level, I didn't gain anything. Would my speed here be faster than someone that is de-conditioned? Totally. And if they were going as fast as I was then they would be working to a high intensity. This is why we say relative intensity. It has to do with the individual, the circumstances they have, the type of day they are having, the stress in their life, etc. But it doesn't mean to go easy. It doesn't mean to go 70% (there are times for this but I won't say this is the everyday push). It means that if you want to reap the benefits then you need to do your Constantly Varied, Functional Movements at HIGH INTENSITY. Don't be afraid of it. Embrace it. It's that fire that will get you what you want. It's that fire that will forge the body, the strength, the endurance and the fitness you want!! :)
