Usually, when it's the holiday time, and everyone knows they will be busy, stressed, and knows that there will be tons of sugary goodness all around them, the tendency is to say that you'll get back on your diet and your workout program after the 1st of the year. Sure it sounds like no big deal. But if you started at Halloween and go for 2 months of eating crap and not doing your workouts....guess what your New Year's resolution will be. Maybe you are lucky and are one of the younger kids that have the metabolism of a raging fire. But if you're in your 20's and you throw it all to the wind, you WILL notice it. So what are you supposed to do?? We know the cleaner you eat and the better workouts you do will make for the body you want. But it shouldn't be an all or nothing thing. There is a gradient you can use to your advantage. If you have been working out and eating right, then your "fitness curve" should have you close to the "fit" side rather than just "well". The thing with being healthier before the holidays is that you can then get a little sloppy with your fitness. As you slide towards the "sickness" side you still have the protection of the "wellness" area to get through first. Meaning you can afford to let your nutrition and health go a little bit. But if you haven't been very good, then you are probably starting in the "wellness" area and the next stop is "sickness" (or unhealthy like weight gain, decreased physiological reactions, decreased recovery and muscle growth, increase inflammation, etc). I'd say the BEST way to handle this is to NOT let yourself chuck it all until Jan 1. Pick something you can do. Make yourself get to the gym AT LEAST 3 times, or at least make 30 minutes of some activities like burpees, hill sprints, or go to the park and do "Cindy". Or do you absolute best to eat 80/20 healthy. Every time you want to eat something bad, cut it in half, or only have it on the weekend. By putting these little barriers out there, you will be better than you would have if you just went nuts. Staying on track needs to be like a game. There will be some wins and loses but try to stay on the winning side. If you have a loss, don't get bummed. Just keep on trucking. Don't set an unrealistic goal to achieve. This will be the ONLY time I say to set an "achievable" goal. Just get yourself through the holidays the right way!! :)
