How often do you feel like you are just getting worse in your training? You have a day that you just don't feel strong or you don't feel fast or you feel like you are totally clumsy. It happens to EVERYONE. When we have those days, it's very easy to think that we have "lost all our fitness" or "we suck now and need to give it up". But we really need to look at the big picture to truly see what's happening. Let's start off with over-training. It IS possible to get into a situation where you are training too hard and doing too much. Usually, this happens when there is a goal in front of us that we want to accomplish and we are afraid that if we don't do more and more and more and every single second aren't better that we will miss something and not be able to achieve the goal. You're training by fear of failure. To know if you are in an over-training state you need to look to see if you are always tired, or have insomnia, you are sore all the time, you are starting to get stupid injuries out of nowhere, you have low sex drive, you aren't happy or happy to workout, and all the scores and times are WAY off the mark for many workouts in a row. Now its time to take a break and change it up so you can let your body and nervous system recover. But what about when you seem to be on fire one day, then total shit the next day. WTF right?!?! How it possible to feel so good and then be like the complete opposite of yourself the next time? This is the natural ebb and flow of your day and your training. We have a MILLION variables we have to deal with on a daily basis. It could be stresses, sickness, lack of sleep, just not really focused on the workout, your kid's birthday, money issues, family drama, and I can go on and on. All of these things will affect your workout. So is your score lower than you think it should be? Maybe. Are you getting worse? Maybe not. You have to look at each training day as a "blip of data" on a massive training chart that is at least a year long. The blips will be all over the place and they all won't be going upwards. But if you look at the general tread and its generally going up, then you are moving in the right direction! This is the main point of what you do: general improvement. So keep the smile on your face and keep moving! You are doing great! Get ready for the next blip!! :)
