All of us have different coping mechanisms we use when we are emotionally stressed.  For some, it might be eating.  For others, it might be drinking or drugs.  For others, it might be running or something physical.  The idea with these is to take our mind off of whatever it is we are stressed about.  If we are down then we may look for something that increases our brain chemical dopamine, the chemical that makes us feel good.  But we will do what we can to give our brain a break from the discomfort.  If these coping mechanisms work to well then we might fall into a situation where it becomes a habit to use it.  These can become addictions.  If you are one that has addictive tendencies then you really need to watch yourself and your actions.  CrossFit has saved the lives of many that have battled with drugs and alcohol.  But I have also seen where fitness activities, which start out as great activities turn into addictions as well.  The point is that there are plenty of things out there to help make us feel better.  But the second they change from an assistence to a necessity, we need to find something else.  You have to be able to realize what is happening.  Understand why you are latching on to this particular thing and that it was something that helped you but now it is hindering you.  From here you need to find something else to distract your mind from it.  A new activity.  New friends.  A new scene.  Whatever.  Get the control back of your brain.  Coping mechanisms are good and needed but we always have to keep an open just in case they aren't helping us anymore.  Oh, and one more thing, if you see a friend that is "coping" and hasn't realized that it's not helping the cause anymore but doing damage to them, please let them know.  They might not like to hear it, but a real friend would say something! :)
