The lifespan of a dumb jock is very short.  There may be a short "hay-day" of some big weights or some fast speeds, but because they don't have the discipline or the desire to do what is necessary to get the most out of their training, they will always be just ok.  When you think of a jock, the usual mindset is that dumb high school meat-head that grunts when they talk.  Against much weaker, and either extremely less skilled or brand new competitors, they seem like a champ.  But if they get up against anyone with any skill, they get smashed.  In athletics, you can't be all brains and no body.  But to be a good athlete, or one that wants to get the most out of their training, you can't be all body and no brains.  There NEEDS to be a blend of the two.   You need to be able to know how to prep your body to be ready.  You need to know how to recover your body after a training session.  You need to understand what YOUR body needs when you have had a tough week of "life" and still are in the gym training.  You need to understand the types and amounts of food you put into your body and understand what each diet can and will do for you.  You need to master movements so that you get the most out of the workouts and also so you can lower the chance of injury.  It's not just about big numbers right now.  It's about constantly increasing and improving with the less chance of something breaking down.  It's about knowing your pacing and how to control your speed during a 2-minute workout, 8-minute workout, 15-minute workout, 3-hour workout, and all the small ups and downs in each.  You need to know if you should break reps up early and by how much to be able to have more energy towards the end of the race.  With all of these variables (and this isn't all of them by any means), you need to use your brain.  You need to be smart.  Use your intelligence.  Use your experience.  Put it all together to be the Master of your Experience.  Be the Intelligent Jock! :)
