Whats the first thing you think when you go to lift something heavy? Is it" oh man this is going to be heavy" or " there's no way I'll be able to lift this!". What about your thoughts right before a hard Open workout? Do you think about how hard it's going to hurt? We all know that negative thoughts aren't good for us yet we ALL seem to do a healthy amount of negative talking to ourselves. And usually just before we have to do something. There couldn't be a more wrong time to do that. The last thing we should be thinking before we move needs to be positive thoughts and ideas about the actions we are going to take and the results we are going to have. Or at very least, no thoughts about the task at all. What works for each person will be totally individual to each person. But you need to be able to find the statement or thought thread that keeps you in the right frame of mind to do great things. For some it may be super focused and visualizing yourself going through all the movements you will need to do so that you get to run on autopilot. For others, it may be to literally take your brain away from the arena so you can think about something not related to the task at hand and then turn and go. This would keep you from having any thoughts or ideas of failure creeping into the forefront. We can get lost in the things that go on in our head and so it's important to be able to control them. Yes, it might mean tricking them sometimes but in the end, it's about getting the best result and having the best performance and for every shred of negative mindset, there will be a decrease in FLOW, or your best performance. Find out which works best for you and run with it. The better you get at this action, the more you will be able to use it in every segment of your life:)
