"What do you do?" Seems like a very normal and surface question right?  It's an icebreaker.  I get it.  But in reality, it's looking to see how you compare.  What is that high ranking job? How much money do they make, etc?  Are you really asking them because you care about those things?  Give this a try next time:  "what are you passionate about?"  What kind of responses do you think you'll get with this?  1) probably a blank stare, 2) a true heartfelt answer that will lead your conversation to a much more real place, or 3) they will say their job anyway and then you can reply as "so you are passionate about being a [insert job title here].  What about being an [X] are you passionate about?"  Now turn that question on yourself.  Think about what you do.  Are you passionate about it?  Do you love it or it just a means to an end?  Just because its a means to an end doesn't mean its bad.  It just means that if you are truly passionate about it, then you will only be working to a particular level.  Take the money out of it.  If you could do the thing that you were most passionate about, what would it be?  So whats stopping you?:)
