"What the HELL Bill !!!  Are you mad at us or something??"  Believe me, I hear this ALL the time.  It usually happens after some workout that the members think is pretty hard.  But even more than that, it when they think there would be NO WAY that they would be able to do it.  Now granted, there will be workouts that are set up that no one will finish.  The reason for this is to ensure that all the members, even those that go lighter than they really should, will be taken to the end of the work.  Other times, its just to push you and see how strong you can mentally be when you know are faced with something that you "probably won't finish".  The fact is that I set the bar up high.  As some of you have seen when you have dropped into other gyms, I set it WAY higher than most.  The reason for this is that generally, I have seen people aim for "just under" the bar.  And if the bar is set low, then what would be the reward for going over it?  There isn't one.  So, I put it up there.  I have been asked if that sets a negative mindset for the members because they are NEVER achieving the goal.  And as much as I understand it, I feel it's the job of the coaches to push you to limits you didn't think you had.  Not all in one day, but over time.  And as they understand that you "aren't supposed to get this goal" becomes ok, then they aren't afraid or worried that they will fail.  They really aren't supposed to get anyways so there isn't any pressure on them.  Now they can just go.  And I see it all the time, they just do.  Eventually, it got to where I could put some ridiculous April Fool Joke for the workout and everyone is ready to hit it....and even more crazy is they are bummed when it's not the real workout!!  This HIGH BAR puts people in a NO-LOSE situation.  When you can't lose, then you have EVERYTHING to gain.  And they do.  So with the bar up high, and they shoot just below it, they end up being MUCH higher and pushing much more than they would otherwise.  I'm really proud of everyone and all the work they have been doing.  Keep reaching for those starts and never have fear of not getting them.  Just keep reaching and you will end up higher than you ever thought you could :)
